Report: Yankees’ Nestor Cortes to have MRI on elbow

New York Yankees left-hander Nestor Cortes is set to have an MRI on his pitching elbow on Wednesday — the same day he was scheduled to start a potential American League East-clinching game against the Baltimore Orioles, ESPN reported.

Based on Cortes’ recent performances, his elbow didn’t seem to be impacting him. Over his past three appearances, Cortes is 1-0 and has thrown 15 1/3 innings, giving up one run on seven hits and seven walks as well as striking out 18.

Reportedly under consideration to get the start Wednesday is starter-turned-reliever Marcus Stroman (10-8, 4.04 ERA) or Cody Poteet (3-0, 2.14). Poteet currently is at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre after his recent activation from the 60-day injured list with a triceps ailment.

Cortes, 29, is 9-10 with a 3.77 ERA across a team-high 174 1/3 innings pitched. He has appeared in 31 games (30 starts) on the season.
